EFFECTS OF POULTRY MANURE ON OKRA CULTIVATION AND PEST MANAGEMENT

Abstract:

Agricultural sustainability and food security are imperative considerations in modern farming practices. This study investigates the impact of poultry manure application on okra cultivation, focusing on both crop yield enhancement and integrated pest management.

Poultry plays a vital role in the soil fertility and productivity and act as a reservoir of plant nutrients especially nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium and micronutrients and as well prevents leaching of nutrients. Poultry manure is a very good source of organic matters and play a vital role in soil fertility improvement as well as supplying primary, secondary and micronutrients for crop production

The research employs a field experiment design, with randomized plots receiving varying concentrations of poultry manure as a primary treatment. Okra plants are cultivated under different poultry manure regimes, and their growth parameters, yield, and overall health are meticulously monitored throughout the growth cycle.

Results indicate a positive correlation between the application of poultry manure and the growth and yield of okra plants. Enhanced soil fertility, increased nutrient availability, and improved water retention attributed to poultry manure contribute to vigorous plant growth and higher okra yields.

In addition to the agronomic benefits, the study explores the effects of poultry manure on pest management in okra cultivation. The organic nature of poultry manure is expected to influence pest dynamics and mitigate common okra pests. Integrated pest management practices, including natural predators and companion planting, are incorporated into the experimental design.

Findings shed light on the role of poultry manure in creating an ecological balance that discourages pest proliferation, reducing the need for chemical pesticides. Observations on pest incidence, severity, and the overall health of the okra plants provide insights into the potential of poultry manure as a dual-purpose agricultural input.

The study concludes by offering practical recommendations for farmers seeking sustainable and environmentally friendly approaches to okra cultivation. The findings contribute to the broader discourse on organic farming practices, emphasizing the synergistic relationship between soil enrichment, crop yield, and pest management in the context of poultry manure application in okra cultivation.
