Abstract:

Integrated Science Education at the Nigerian Certificate in Education (NCE) level plays a crucial role in preparing educators to teach science in a holistic and comprehensive manner. However, the teaching and learning of this subject face numerous challenges that impact the quality of education and the effectiveness of future science teachers. This study aims to identify and analyze the problems associated with teaching and learning Integrated Science Education at NCE institutions in Nigeria.

Using a mixed-methods approach, the study combines quantitative data collected from surveys distributed to 200 NCE Integrated Science students and 50 lecturers across various colleges of education in Nigeria, and qualitative data gathered from in-depth interviews with 20 lecturers and 30 students. The survey explores participants’ perceptions of the difficulties faced in teaching and learning, while the interviews provide detailed insights into the specific challenges and potential solutions.

The findings reveal several key issues, including insufficient teaching resources, a lack of adequately trained and motivated teachers, overcrowded classrooms, and a curriculum that does not effectively integrate theoretical and practical aspects of science education. Moreover, there is a significant gap between the curriculum content and the real-world application of scientific concepts, leading to a lack of student engagement and interest.

This research highlights the need for a comprehensive review and reform of the Integrated Science Education curriculum at the NCE level, improved teacher training programs, and increased investment in educational resources and infrastructure. Addressing these challenges is vital for enhancing the quality of science education in Nigeria and ensuring that NCE graduates are well-equipped to teach Integrated Science effectively.
