NIGERIAN-CAMEROON BOUNDARY DISPUTE:  THE QUEST FOR BAKASSI PENINSULAR

Abstract:

This paper appraises African Boundary Politics within the theme of boundary conflicts, questions after independence – irredentism, the concern and intervention of OAU/AU and the International bodies with focus on NIGERIAN-CAMEROON BOUNDARY DISPUTES: THE QUEST FOR BAKASSI PENINSULAR. 

The aim is to highlight the European conquest and division of Africa contrary to existing traditional boundaries in the Pre-Colonial Africa and how the modern African boundaries evolved in the colonial era and affected post-colonial era territorial boundaries and crossborder activities of African States in determining the basis for boundary disputes and settlements. The paper also noted the issues and challenges in Boundary Politics and CrossBorder Relations in Africa since Independence and the level of cooperation achieved in resolving boundary issues and securing interventions within OAU(AU)/UN framework and other approaches for peace settlement. 

The research methods adopted is the historical approach taking cognizance of the existing scholarly work and researches and using the mode of a simple descriptive collation and analysis of historical data for objective precision and rationalism to determine the authenticity of data and their accuracy to findings and application of knowledge while ascertaining the date, location and authorship of materials and their originality in presentation of facts.
