THE IMPACT OF NIGERIAN FOREIGN POLICY ON PEACE BUILDING WITHIN AFRICA
ABSTRACT
This work discusses the impact of Nigerian foreign policy on peace building within Africa. The Nigeria’s role in the maintenance of peace and stability in the African continent is great due to its Afrocentric policy.
Nigeria has taken part in a numerous peacekeeping and peace-making processes in the continent. In fact, the country’s good largesse has cut across the African continent and beyond where the Nigerian peacekeepers had made the country proud in their efforts abroad when returning peace and stability back to the conflicts zones.
However, while Nigeria has been making series of sacrifices both length, breath, left, right and centre, committing huge resources (both human and material resources) towards its peace maintenance in African
.A hundred and twenty questionnaires were distributed among people, including international relations experts, diplomats, and concerned citizens from selected states in Nigeria. Interviews and surveys were also conducted.
Primary and secondary data will be used in the analysis. Tables and percentages will also be used as the instrument of analysis
It will be observed therefore that Nigerian foreign policy on peace building within Africa will pave a path for social and economic development for nations in Africa.
Nigeria, as a nation with strategic and key political position in Africa have a significant relationship in its policies with respect to building a lasting peaceful atmosphere among Africa nations, Nigeria have for many decades lived up to that responsibility, and there is therefore a need for an increased and dedicated effort towards maintenance of a peace and cooperative atmosphere in Africa.
It is suggested that social transformation of Nigeria’s current foreign policy (that is, to one focused and committed to putting people at its centre) and a change in the policies of dominant global powers towards Africa would enhance human emancipation and eliminate the numerous peace challenges confronting the peoples of the continent.
