A FRESH DIMENSION OF KIDNAPPING IN NIGERIA EVALUATING THE ETIOLOGIES OF THE CRIME

Abstract

Kidnapping have stood and still stands as a heinous crime which extended through differing ramifications over the passing years, defying absolute obliteration.  In Nigeria it first appeared on the Nigerian political panorama in February 2006, as a primary deviance, in the appearance of liberation fighters (MEND). It was believed that kidnapping would merely annihilate the peace and development of the Niger Delta region.  While the consequential effects were unforeseen, kidnapping has lately continued unabated, attracting so many imitators, who infiltrated into so many states, and has become phenomenological in nature which is now amid tautological debate. This paper set out to examine all significant factors that contribute to kidnapping. A qualitative approach of reviewing existing literature on kidnapping was used in order to delineate the various aetiologies and dimensions that foster kidnapping in Nigeria. The following were the emerging dimensions critically analysed be the paper: Economic dimension, political dimension and insecurity dimension. The paper further initiates some recommendations which would reduce the menace of kidnapping in Nigeria against its furtherance to be a transnational organised crime. One of the strategies included, was the total revamping of the Nigeria Police Force, based on their competencies: The need to trim down colossal funds spent on running government in the best interest of the unemployed and the helpless masses in general was indicated toward fruitfully engaging the idle and for all round personal sustainability.

Keywords: kidnapping, economic, political dimensions, crime and insecurity.
