ABSTRACT

The study compared the output performances of cooperative and non-cooperative farms in Rivers State, Nigeria. Two Local Government Areas (Ahoada East and Ikwerre) were purposively selected. Cross sectional data generated from 160 (80 cooperative and 80 non cooperative) smallholder cooperative and non-cooperative farmers randomly selected from sixteen communities were used. I>scriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis were used in analyzing the data. Results showed that the significant determinants of the output performance of cooperative farms in the study area were expenditure on planting materials and capital inputs while farm size, labour and capital inputs were the significant determinants of the output performance of the non-cooperative farms. Based on the findings, of this study, it was therefore recommended that policies geared towards the encouragement of the fonnation of farmers’ cooperative societies be put in place by the government. Furthermore, credit facilities be skewed in their favour to enable members of these farmers’ cooperative societies have more access to improved planting materials.
