HIGH ALTITUDE PLATFORMS STATIONS-WIRELESS POWER TRANSFER SOLUTIONS FOR SUSTAINABLE OPERATIONS

Abstract

High Altitude Platform Stations (HAPS) have emerged as a promising technology for enhancing global connectivity and providing various services, including telecommunications, environmental monitoring, and disaster management. Positioned in the stratosphere, HAPS offer several advantages over traditional terrestrial and satellite-based systems, such as lower latency and broader coverage. However, sustaining the continuous operation of HAPS poses significant challenges, primarily due to energy constraints. Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) solutions present a viable method to address these energy challenges, ensuring sustainable and reliable operation of HAPS.

This paper explores the integration of WPT technologies with HAPS to create a sustainable operational model. We review current advancements in WPT, including microwave and laser-based power transfer methods, and assess their applicability to HAPS. Furthermore, we analyze the efficiency, safety, and environmental impact of these WPT solutions. Case studies of successful implementations and experimental setups are discussed to illustrate practical considerations and potential barriers.

Our findings indicate that WPT can significantly extend the operational lifespan of HAPS by providing a consistent energy supply, thus enhancing their utility in continuous service applications. We also highlight the technical, regulatory, and economic factors influencing the adoption of WPT for HAPS. The paper concludes with recommendations for future research and development to optimize WPT technologies, ensuring they meet the rigorous demands of high-altitude operations while promoting sustainability.

By addressing the power supply challenges through innovative WPT solutions, HAPS can achieve more reliable and sustainable operations, paving the way for expanded use in various global applications.
