CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Youth play a crucial role in national development as they constitute the most active and dynamic segment of the population (National Population Commission, 2019). However, recent trends in urban centres, including Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), indicate an alarming rise in youth involvement in criminal activities. Criminal activities among youth encompass behaviours that violate legal norms and societal rules, such as theft, vandalism, drug abuse, cybercrime, and violent acts (Siegel, 2018).
Several socio-economic, cultural, and environmental factors contribute to youth involvement in crime. Poverty, unemployment, peer pressure, weak family structures, lack of access to quality education, and exposure to negative influences are some of the key determinants (Alemika & Chukwuma, 2016; Farrington, 2017). In rapidly urbanizing regions such as AMAC, youth are particularly susceptible to criminal tendencies due to economic inequalities, inadequate recreational facilities, and poor social support systems (UN-Habitat, 2020).
Criminal activities among youth have multifaceted effects. They threaten the social, economic, and psychological well-being of the youth themselves and negatively affect community development. Youth involved in crime are more likely to face educational disruption, unemployment, social stigmatization, and mental health challenges (Moffitt, 2018). Communities, in turn, experience reduced security, decreased investment opportunities, and general erosion of social cohesion. Therefore, understanding the effects of criminal activities on youth is vital for developing effective intervention and prevention strategies that enhance youth welfare and community safety (World Bank, 2015).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Criminal activities among youth in Abuja Municipal Area Council have become a significant social concern. Reports from law enforcement agencies and community leaders suggest rising cases of theft, fraud, substance abuse, cultism, and cybercrime involving young people. These behaviours not only compromise the development and potential of affected youth but also undermine social order, community trust, and public safety (Alemika & Chukwuma, 2016).
Despite government and non-governmental interventions, youth remain vulnerable to criminal influences due to persistent socio-economic challenges, peer influence, and limited access to education and employment opportunities (Farrington, 2017). This situation raises questions about the effects of criminal activities on the physical, economic, social, and psychological well-being of youth in AMAC. A lack of empirical research specific to this context hinders the development of targeted policies and programmes aimed at addressing youth-related criminal behaviour effectively.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to evaluate the effects of criminal activities on youth in Abuja Municipal Area Council.
The specific objectives are:
To identify the common types of criminal activities engaged in by youth in AMAC.
To examine the socio-economic and environmental factors influencing youth involvement in crime.
To evaluate the effects of criminal activities on the educational attainment and employment opportunities of youth.
To assess the psychological, social, and community-related consequences of criminal activities on youth.
To recommend strategies for reducing youth involvement in criminal activities and mitigating their effects.
1.4 Research Questions
This study will be guided by the following research questions:
What types of criminal activities are most prevalent among youth in AMAC?
What socio-economic and environmental factors contribute to youth involvement in criminal activities?
How do criminal activities affect the educational attainment and employment opportunities of youth?
What are the psychological and social consequences of criminal activities on youth?
What strategies can be employed to reduce youth involvement in criminal activities and their effects?
1.5 Research Hypotheses
The study will test the following hypotheses:
H01: Criminal activities have no significant effect on the educational attainment and employment opportunities of youth in AMAC.
H02: Criminal activities have no significant impact on the psychological and social well-being of youth in AMAC.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it provides insights into the effects of criminal activities on youth, thereby enabling policymakers, law enforcement agencies, educators, and community leaders to develop effective interventions. It will help in designing youth empowerment programmes, counselling initiatives, and community-based crime prevention strategies. Furthermore, the study contributes to academic literature on criminology, youth development, and urban sociology by providing empirical evidence on youth criminal behaviour in Abuja (Moffitt, 2018; Scheyvens, 2002).
1.7 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on youth aged 15–35 years residing in Abuja Municipal Area Council. It covers different forms of criminal activities, including theft, drug-related offences, cybercrime, vandalism, and cult-related activities. The study examines the effects of these activities on youth in terms of education, employment, psychological well-being, social life, and community relationships.
1.8 Definition of Terms
Youth: Individuals within the age range of 15–35 years who are considered active participants in social and economic life.
Criminal Activities: Acts that violate established laws and social norms, including theft, fraud, vandalism, drug abuse, and violent behaviour (Siegel, 2018).
Effects: The consequences or outcomes of criminal activities on education, employment, psychological state, social interactions, and community welfare.
Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC): A local government area within the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria.
