Introduction

Medication adherence remains a major determinant of successful treatment outcomes across diverse medical conditions. The World Health Organization (WHO, 2019) identifies non-adherence as one of the leading causes of poor therapeutic effectiveness and increased disease burden globally. Proper counselling has emerged as an essential intervention in improving patients’ understanding of their medications, reducing misconceptions, and enhancing their commitment to recommended therapy. Counselling promotes a patient-centered approach, ensuring individuals receive adequate information, motivation, and support needed to adhere to treatment regimens (Haynes et al., 2008).

In many developing countries, including Nigeria, non-adherence rates remain high due to poor health literacy, cultural beliefs, financial constraints, and limited communication with healthcare professionals (Oladimeji & Okeke, 2020).
