INFLUENCE OF CHILD ABUSE AND SOCIAL MEDIA ON STUDENTS’ DISCIPLINE IN PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN ABUJA MUNICIPAL AREA COUNCIL
Abstract
This study investigates the influence of child abuse and social media on students’ discipline in public secondary schools within Abuja Municipal Area Council. Increasing cases of indiscipline among students have raised concerns among parents, educators, and policymakers. Child abuse, which manifests in physical, emotional, sexual, and neglectful forms, often has long-lasting psychological and behavioral impacts on learners. Similarly, social media, though a powerful tool for information and interaction, has been linked to negative behaviors such as cyberbullying, addiction, truancy, and poor academic engagement. The study adopted a descriptive survey design, targeting students and teachers in selected public secondary schools. A structured questionnaire was used to gather data, while both descriptive and inferential statistics were employed in the analysis. Findings revealed that child abuse significantly affects students’ self-esteem, emotional stability, and compliance with school rules. Additionally, excessive and unregulated use of social media contributes to lateness to school, disobedience to authority, and exposure to deviant behavior. The study recommends that schools and parents should strengthen guidance and counseling services, enforce child protection policies, and promote responsible use of social media. Awareness programs should also be introduced to sensitize students on the risks of abuse and uncontrolled online engagement. The research contributes to understanding the dual impact of family and digital environments on students’ discipline, providing insights for educational stakeholders in Abuja and beyond.
