EFFECT OF FORENSIC ACCOUNTING IN DETECTION AND PREVENTION OF FRAUD IN NIGERIA
ABSTRACT
The rising incidence of corporate fraud in Nigeria has continued to undermine organizational performance, weaken investor confidence, and threaten overall economic stability. As a result, forensic accounting has gained prominence as a specialized mechanism for detecting and preventing fraudulent activities. This study examines the effect of forensic accounting on the detection and prevention of fraud in Nigeria, focusing on how forensic accounting techniques, tools, and professional practices contribute to fraud mitigation across public and private institutions.
The study adopts a descriptive research design and draws on both primary and secondary sources to evaluate the relationship between forensic accounting practices and fraud control mechanisms. Key forensic techniques—such as digital forensics, investigative auditing, litigation support, and fraud risk assessment—are assessed in terms of their effectiveness in uncovering financial irregularities and strengthening internal control systems. The findings indicate that forensic accounting significantly enhances fraud detection by improving the quality of financial investigations, increasing transparency in financial reporting, and providing expert support during litigation. Moreover, forensic accounting plays a preventive role by reinforcing organizational governance, promoting compliance, and discouraging fraudulent behavior through robust monitoring systems.
The study concludes that the integration of forensic accounting into organizational audit processes is essential for combating fraud in Nigeria. It recommends increased investment in forensic training, stronger regulatory frameworks, and the adoption of advanced forensic technologies to further enhance fraud detection and prevention across sectors.
