CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Clinical training is a fundamental component of radiography education, designed to bridge the gap between theoretical instruction and professional practice. Through clinical training, radiography students gain hands-on experience in diagnostic imaging procedures, patient care, radiation protection, and the use of sophisticated imaging equipment (McAllister et al., 2014). The effectiveness of clinical training largely depends on the quality of supervision, availability of learning resources, and the overall clinical learning environment.
Radiography is a practice-oriented profession, and students’ exposure to real clinical settings is essential for the development of competence, confidence, and professional identity (Eze, Okafor & Nwankwo, 2018). Clinical training allows students to apply classroom knowledge, refine technical skills, and develop professional attitudes under the guidance of qualified radiographers. Students’ views and practical experiences during this period play a significant role in shaping their learning outcomes and future professional performance (Henderson et al., 2012).
Several studies have shown that positive clinical learning environments enhance students’ motivation, skill acquisition, and satisfaction, while negative experiences—such as inadequate supervision, limited equipment, heavy workload, and poor staff–student relationships—can hinder learning and lead to stress and reduced confidence (Chan, 2013; Mohan et al., 2019). In teaching hospitals, where patient volumes are often high, radiography students may experience both opportunities for diverse clinical exposure and challenges related to overcrowding and time constraints.
UNIOSUN Teaching Hospital serves as a major clinical training center for radiography students in southwestern Nigeria. The hospital provides exposure to various imaging modalities, including general radiography, ultrasound, and specialized diagnostic procedures. Evaluating students’ views and practical experiences in this setting is essential for identifying strengths and weaknesses in the clinical training program and for improving the quality of radiography education. However, there is limited empirical evidence documenting radiography students’ clinical training experiences at UNIOSUN Teaching Hospital, creating a need for this study.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the central role of clinical training in radiography education, many students report challenges that negatively affect their learning experiences. Previous studies have identified problems such as insufficient supervision, inadequate feedback, lack of modern imaging equipment, and unfavourable learning environments as major barriers to effective clinical training (Akinwale et al., 2017).
In Nigerian teaching hospitals, increasing student enrollment without corresponding expansion of clinical training resources has raised concerns about the quality of hands-on training provided to radiography students (Ogunleye & Adebayo, 2020). Students may feel inadequately supported or perceive clinical training as stressful rather than educative, which can affect their professional development.
At UNIOSUN Teaching Hospital, anecdotal evidence suggests variations in students’ practical experiences across departments and training periods. However, systematic evaluation of radiography students’ views and practical experiences during clinical training in this institution is limited. Without empirical assessment, it becomes difficult for educators and hospital administrators to implement informed improvements. This study therefore seeks to evaluate radiography students’ views and practical experiences during clinical training at UNIOSUN Teaching Hospital.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The general objective of this study is to evaluate radiography students’ views and practical experiences during clinical training at UNIOSUN Teaching Hospital.
The specific objectives are to:
assess radiography students’ views of the clinical learning environment at UNIOSUN Teaching Hospital;
evaluate students’ practical experiences in performing radiographic procedures during clinical training;
examine the adequacy of supervision and guidance provided to students;
identify challenges encountered by radiography students during clinical training;
suggest strategies for improving the quality of clinical training for radiography students.
1.4 Research Questions
The study will be guided by the following research questions:
What are radiography students’ views of the clinical learning environment at UNIOSUN Teaching Hospital?
What practical experiences do radiography students gain during clinical training?
How adequate is the supervision and guidance provided during clinical training?
What challenges do students encounter during clinical training?
What measures can improve radiography students’ clinical training experiences?
1.5 Research Hypotheses
The following null hypotheses will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance:
H₀₁: There is no significant relationship between clinical supervision and radiography students’ practical experiences.
H₀₂: The clinical learning environment has no significant influence on radiography students’ views during clinical training.
1.6 Significance of the Study
The findings of this study will be valuable to radiography educators, clinical instructors, and hospital management by providing insights into students’ experiences and areas requiring improvement. It will assist academic institutions in reviewing radiography curricula and clinical training frameworks. Policy makers and regulatory bodies may also use the findings to establish standards for clinical education in radiography. Additionally, the study will contribute to existing literature and serve as a reference for future research in allied health education.
1.7 Scope of the Study
This study is limited to radiography students undergoing clinical training at UNIOSUN Teaching Hospital. It focuses on students’ views, practical experiences, supervision, learning environment, and challenges encountered during clinical training.
1.8 Limitations of the Study
The study may be limited by respondents’ subjective perceptions, which could influence their responses. Time constraints and limited access to all student cohorts may also affect data collection. Nevertheless, appropriate research methods will be employed to ensure reliability and validity.
