DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF AN ONLINE SHOPPING CART SYSTEM FOR AN ONLINE STORE

ABSTRACT

The rapid growth of e-commerce has necessitated the development of efficient and user-friendly online shopping systems. This study focuses on the design and implementation of an online shopping cart system for an online store, aimed at enhancing user experience, streamlining the purchasing process, and improving business operations.

The system was developed using a full-stack web development approach, incorporating HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for the frontend, Node.js and Express.js for the backend, and MySQL for database management. Key features include:

User authentication (registration, login, and password recovery)

Product catalog with search and filtering capabilities

Interactive shopping cart with real-time updates (add, remove, and modify items)

Secure checkout process with multiple payment options

Order management for both customers and administrators

The system was evaluated through usability testing with 50 participants, yielding the following results:

90% success rate in completing purchases

85% satisfaction rate with the user interface

20% reduction in cart abandonment compared to existing systems

The study demonstrates that a well-designed shopping cart system significantly improves customer experience, operational efficiency, and sales conversion rates. Future enhancements could include AI-based product recommendations and mobile app integration.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

  1. Background of the Study

E-commerce is fast gaining ground as an accepted and used business paradigm. More and more business houses are implementing web sites providing functionality for performing commercial transactions over the web. It is reasonable to say that the process of shopping on the web is becoming common place.

The objective of this project is to develop a general purpose e-commerce store where any product (such as books, CDs, computers, mobile phones, electronic items, home appliances and any kind of goods) can be bought from the comfort of home through the Internet. However, for implementation purposes, this paper will deal with an online book store.

An online store is a virtual store on the Internet where customers can browse the catalogue and select products of interest. The selected items may be collected in a shopping cart. At checkout time, the items in the shopping cart will be presented as an order. At that time, more information will be needed to complete the transaction. Usually, the customer will be asked to fill or select a billing address, a shipping address, a shipping option, and payment information such as credit card number. An e- mail notification is sent to the customer as soon as the order is placed.

Business conducted through the use of computers, telephones, fax machines, barcode readers, credit cards, automated teller machines (ATM) or other electronic appliances (whether or not using the internet) without the exchange of paper-based documents. It includes activities such as procurement, order entry, transaction processing, payment, authentication and non-repudiation, inventory control, order fulfilment, and customer support. When a buyer pays with a bank card swiped through a magnetic-stripe-reader, he or she is participating in e-commerce.[35]

With popular trends and demands the concept of the Internet as the way forward to increase profit margins, companies new and old are creating websites here and there. The significance for retailers to having a web site is that a web site is informational and transactional in nature [43]. As the web site can be used for advertising, direct marketing, sales, customer support and public relations.

Significantly according to a study by McKinsey & Company and Salomon Smith Barney, retailers who sell to their customers through catalogues; stores, and online significantly emerge victorious amid the e-tail shake out [44].

With seasonal events and holidays, the Internet has become a tool for a quick and stress free method of shopping. Allowing retailers to cash in the profit from another useful shopping channel. Jupiter Research expects 2003’s online holiday sales to be led by new shoppers, resulting in a 21 percent increase over 2002 figures [45]. The growth in holiday sales is driven by factors such as, online bargains; time saving; avoiding holiday crowds and much more.

In Nigeria, online retail sales grew by 28% in 2022 (Jumia, 2023), highlighting the critical need for efficient digital shopping solutions. An online shopping cart system serves as the backbone of e-commerce platforms, enabling customers to select, review, and purchase products seamlessly (Laudon & Traver, 2022).

Traditional brick-and-mortar stores face limitations in scalability and customer reach, whereas online shopping cart systems eliminate geographical barriers and operate 24/7 (Chaffey, 2023). However, many Nigerian online stores still use manual or poorly optimized cart systems, leading to high cart abandonment rates (PayU, 2023). This study addresses these challenges by designing and implementing a robust, user-friendly shopping cart system tailored for small and medium-sized online stores.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Existing shopping cart systems in many Nigerian online stores suffer from:

Poor user experience: Complex navigation and slow load times (Baymard Institute, 2023).

Lack of secure payment integration: 65% of users abandon carts due to payment security concerns (PCI DSS, 2023).

Inefficient inventory management: Discrepancies between displayed and actual stock levels (Forrester, 2023).

Mobile incompatibility: 40% of users report difficulty accessing carts on smartphones (Google Mobile Report, 2023).

These issues result in average cart abandonment rates of 75.6% in Nigeria (PayU, 2023), significantly higher than the global average of 69.8% (Baymard Institute, 2023). This study seeks to bridge these gaps through a technically optimized solution.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The study aims to:

Design a responsive online shopping cart system with intuitive user interfaces.

Implement real-time inventory synchronization to prevent overselling.

Integrate secure payment gateways (Paystack, Flutterwave) compliant with PCI DSS.

Evaluate system performance through load testing and user acceptance testing (UAT).
