Preventing Medication Errors: The Critical Role of Pharmacy Technicians
ABSTRACT
Medication safety is a critical component of quality healthcare, as medication errors remain a major cause of preventable patient harm worldwide. Pharmacy technicians play an increasingly important role in ensuring safe medication use through their involvement in dispensing, documentation, and patient support processes. This study examines the role of pharmacy technicians in preventing medication errors and promoting medication safety within healthcare settings.
The study adopts a descriptive and analytical approach, drawing on existing literature, hospital reports, and professional guidelines to evaluate how pharmacy technicians contribute to error prevention across the medication-use process. Key areas of focus include prescription processing, medication preparation and labeling, inventory management, communication with pharmacists and other healthcare professionals, and patient education support.
Findings indicate that well-trained pharmacy technicians significantly reduce the incidence of dispensing and documentation errors by ensuring accurate data entry, proper medication labeling, and adherence to standard operating procedures. Their role in double-checking prescriptions, managing high-alert medications under supervision, and supporting patient understanding of drug use also contributes to improved safety outcomes. However, challenges such as inadequate training, role ambiguity, high workload, and limited continuing education opportunities can compromise their effectiveness.
The study concludes that pharmacy technicians are essential partners in medication safety and error prevention. It recommends strengthening technician training programs, clarifying scope of practice, and integrating technicians more fully into multidisciplinary safety teams to enhance patient outcomes and healthcare quality.

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Medication safety is a critical component of quality healthcare delivery. It involves the prevention of medication errors that may occur during prescribing, dispensing, administering, and monitoring of drugs. Medication errors are a major cause of patient harm worldwide and contribute significantly to morbidity, mortality, and increased healthcare costs (World Health Organization [WHO], 2017).
Pharmacy technicians play an increasingly important role in modern healthcare systems, particularly in hospital and community pharmacy settings. They assist pharmacists in dispensing medications, preparing prescriptions, managing inventory, and interacting with patients. Through these roles, pharmacy technicians are well-positioned to contribute to medication safety and error prevention (Desselle & Holmes, 2017).
The complexity of drug therapy, polypharmacy, and increased patient loads have heightened the risk of medication errors in healthcare facilities. Errors such as wrong drug, wrong dose, wrong patient, or wrong route of administration can have serious consequences (Institute of Medicine [IOM], 2007). Ensuring medication safety therefore requires a collaborative approach in which pharmacy technicians serve as a key line of defense against errors.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite advances in healthcare systems, medication errors remain common in both developed and developing countries. In Nigeria and many other low- and middle-income countries, challenges such as understaffing, inadequate training, poor documentation systems, and high patient volumes increase the likelihood of medication-related mistakes (Auta et al., 2015).
Although pharmacists are traditionally seen as the primary professionals responsible for medication safety, the role of pharmacy technicians in preventing errors is often under-recognized. There is limited empirical focus on how pharmacy technicians contribute to error prevention through accurate dispensing, patient counseling support, and adherence to standard operating procedures (SOPs). This gap underscores the need to examine the role of pharmacy technicians in ensuring medication safety.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to examine the role of pharmacy technicians in ensuring medication safety and preventing errors. The specific objectives are to:
Identify common types of medication errors in healthcare settings.
Examine the roles performed by pharmacy technicians in medication dispensing and management.
Assess how pharmacy technicians contribute to error prevention.
Identify challenges faced by pharmacy technicians in promoting medication safety.
Suggest strategies for strengthening the role of pharmacy technicians in error prevention.

1.7 Operational Definition of Terms
Medication Safety: Practices aimed at preventing harm to patients from medication use.
Medication Error: Any preventable event that may cause inappropriate medication use or patient harm (IOM, 2007).
Pharmacy Technician: A trained healthcare worker who supports pharmacists in dispensing and managing medications.
Error Prevention: Strategies and actions taken to reduce the occurrence of medication-related mistakes.
