ISOLATION AND IDENTIFICATION OF HELMINTH PARASITES OF PUBLIC HEALTH IMPORTANCE FROM COMMERCIAL ACQUACULTURE PONDS WATER
Abstract
Aquaculture is a rapidly growing sector that contributes significantly to global food security. However, the intensification of aquaculture practices has raised concerns about water quality and the potential transmission of helminth parasites, which pose risks to both aquatic organisms and human health. This study aimed to isolate and identify helminth parasites of public health importance from the water of commercial aquaculture ponds. Water samples were collected from 10 commercial aquaculture ponds in [specific region] over a six-month period. Parasites were isolated using sedimentation and filtration techniques, followed by microscopic examination and molecular identification using PCR and sequencing. A total of [X] helminth species were identified, including Ascaris lumbricoides, Ancylostoma duodenale, and Schistosoma spp., all of which are known to cause significant human diseases. The prevalence of these parasites varied across ponds, with higher concentrations observed in ponds with poor water management practices. The findings highlight the potential health risks associated with contaminated aquaculture water and underscore the need for improved water quality monitoring and management in commercial aquaculture systems. This study provides critical insights into the presence of helminth parasites in aquaculture environments and emphasizes the importance of adopting sustainable practices to mitigate public health risks. Recommendations include regular deworming of fish stocks, improved waste management, and public health education for aquaculture workers and consumers.
