EFFECT OF OIL PALM FROND ASH ON THE GEOTECHNICAL PROPERTIES OF A LIME STABILIZED LATERITIC SOIL
Abstract:
The construction industry is continuously seeking sustainable solutions to enhance soil stabilization methods and reduce environmental impact. This study investigates the influence of incorporating oil palm frond ash (OPFA) into lime-stabilized lateritic soil on its geotechnical properties. The experimental program involves varying proportions of OPFA mixed with lime and lateritic soil to evaluate their combined effects on soil strength, compaction characteristics, and durability.
Laboratory tests, including Atterberg limits, compaction, California Bearing Ratio (CBR), and unconfined compressive strength (UCS), were conducted on the soil specimens with different OPFA and lime content. The study also explores the microstructural changes using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to provide insights into the interactions at the particle level.
The results aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of how OPFA, a by-product of the palm oil industry, can contribute to the improvement of geotechnical properties in lime-stabilized lateritic soils. The findings may offer sustainable alternatives for soil stabilization, reducing reliance on traditional stabilizers and promoting the environmentally friendly disposal of agricultural waste.
