Abstract

Public sector accounting plays a critical role in ensuring transparency, accountability, and efficient use of public resources. The primary objective of public sector accounting is to provide accurate and timely financial information that supports decision-making, enhances resource allocation, and promotes accountability within public sector entities. This study examines the impact of public sector accounting on accountability in public sector organizations, with a focus on how effective accounting practices influence financial management, public trust, and governance.

The research employs a mixed-method approach, combining quantitative data from financial reports with qualitative insights from interviews with public sector accountants and auditors. The study explores key aspects of public sector accounting, including budgetary control, financial reporting, and internal audit processes, to assess their influence on accountability mechanisms.

Findings reveal that robust public sector accounting practices significantly enhance accountability by providing clear financial records, improving transparency in the management of public funds, and reducing the potential for mismanagement and corruption. However, challenges such as inadequate training, weak institutional frameworks, and limited technology adoption were identified as barriers to achieving full accountability.

The study concludes that strengthening public sector accounting systems, along with capacity building and enhanced regulatory oversight, can further promote accountability, leading to better governance and improved public sector performance. Recommendations for policy makers include investing in technology to modernize accounting systems and reinforcing audit functions to ensure effective monitoring and evaluation of public financial activities.
