Abstract:

This study examines the role of women in peacebuilding initiatives in Nigeria, focusing on their contributions, challenges, and the overall impact of their involvement in conflict resolution processes. In a country plagued by various forms of conflict, ranging from ethno-religious tensions to political violence, women have emerged as key players in fostering peace and stability. Despite their significant contributions, their roles are often underrecognized and underutilized.

The research explores the various ways in which Nigerian women have engaged in peacebuilding efforts, including grassroots mobilization, mediation, advocacy, and participation in formal peace processes. It also investigates the socio-cultural and institutional barriers that hinder their full participation in these initiatives. Through a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods, the study draws on interviews, case studies, and existing literature to provide a comprehensive analysis of the impact of women’s involvement in peacebuilding.

Findings suggest that women bring unique perspectives and approaches to conflict resolution that are essential for sustainable peace. However, their contributions are frequently marginalized due to entrenched gender biases and limited access to decision-making platforms. The study concludes by recommending strategies to enhance the visibility and effectiveness of women in peacebuilding, advocating for greater inclusion in policy formulation and implementation processes at both local and national levels.

This research underscores the critical need to support and empower women as central actors in peacebuilding efforts, recognizing their potential to drive lasting change in Nigeria’s pursuit of peace and development.

Chapter One:

Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Peacebuilding is a critical process in conflict-prone regions, aiming to establish sustainable peace by addressing the root causes of conflict and fostering reconciliation among conflicting parties. In Nigeria, a country characterized by diverse ethno-religious groups and political tensions, the need for effective peacebuilding strategies is paramount. Over the years, various initiatives have been undertaken to resolve conflicts, but the role of women in these processes has often been overlooked, despite their potential to contribute significantly to peace and stability.

Women in Nigeria have historically played crucial roles in conflict resolution at the community level, often engaging in informal peacebuilding activities such as mediation, dialogue facilitation, and advocacy. This marginalization not only undermines the effectiveness of peacebuilding initiatives but also perpetuates gender inequality. The underrepresentation of women in peacebuilding is a significant problem that needs to be addressed to achieve sustainable peace in Nigeria. This study aims to investigate the reasons behind this exclusion, the impact of women’s involvement in peacebuilding, and strategies to enhance their participation.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

General Objective: The general objective of this study is to examine the role of women in peacebuilding initiatives in Nigeria and to assess the impact of their participation on the peace process.

Specific Objectives:

To explore the various ways in which women contribute to peacebuilding initiatives in Nigeria.

To identify the challenges faced by women in participating in peacebuilding processes.

To assess the impact of women’s involvement in peacebuilding on the sustainability of peace in conflict-prone areas.

To propose strategies for enhancing the participation of women in formal peacebuilding initiatives.

1.5 Hypotheses

Increased participation of women in peacebuilding leads to more sustainable peace outcomes in conflict-prone areas.

Implementing gender-sensitive policies and providing platforms for women’s involvement will enhance the effectiveness of peacebuilding initiatives in Nigeria.

1.6 Significance of the Study
