EFFECTS OF NITROGEN AND SPACING ON THE GROWTH AND YIELD OF POTATO (Solarium tuberOSUM I.)
ABSTRACT
Data are reported from an experiment conducted under rain conditions in 1984 at the University Farm of Ahmadu Bello University, Samaru, Zaria, to study the effect of nitrogen and spacing. on the growth and yield of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.). Three levels of nitrogen (0, 60 and 120 kgN/ha), three plant spacings (20, 30 and 40cm) and two potato varieties (B9462-1 and BR3-18) were used. Results revealed that nitrogen remarkably increased the number of leaves, axillary branches, stems, stolons and tubers, plant height, leaf,:stem and tuber dry weights, leaf area index and tie assimi rate. It also increased the total yield and the proportion of tubers of size greater than 40mm and less than 40mm diameter. Spacing had no visible effect on the number of leaves, plant height, dry matter and percent; crude protein. Leaf stem and tuber dry weights were increased by increasing spacing between plants. The leaf area index, total yield, number of tubers per unit area, yield of tubers falling into the two grades considered were increased by close spacing. The yield of the two varieties, differed markedly, variety B9462-1 yielding about twice as much as variety BR63-18. For each spacing variety BR63-18 produced significantly more number of tubers than the other variety. The two varieties showed a significant linear response to nitrogen and spacing.
