CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

The rise of social media has transformed the way people engage with sports, providing fans with instant access to news, live updates, and direct interactions with athletes and teams (Billings et al., 2017). Platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and WhatsApp have significantly influenced how sports enthusiasts consume content, participate in discussions, and express their loyalty (Kumar & Natarajan, 2020). In Nigeria, social media has become an essential tool for sports engagement, allowing fans to follow their favorite teams, watch highlights, and participate in online debates (Ogunleye & Salawu, 2019).

Kwara State, like many other regions, has witnessed a growing reliance on social media among sports fans. Local sports teams, clubs, and organizations use digital platforms to communicate with their audience, promote events, and enhance fan experience (Adewale & Yusuf, 2021). The shift from traditional media, such as television and newspapers, to digital engagement has redefined the sports landscape, making fan interaction more dynamic and participatory (Pedersen, 2022).

Despite the benefits of social media, challenges such as misinformation, cyberbullying, and digital exclusion still exist. These issues raise concerns about the effectiveness of social media in fostering meaningful fan engagement (Nwankwo & Akinwale, 2020). Therefore, this study aims to examine the impact of social media on sports fan engagement in Kwara State, Nigeria, assessing both its opportunities and challenges.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The traditional methods of sports fan engagement, such as attending live matches and consuming content via television and newspapers, have been supplemented by digital interaction through social media (Wang & Zhou, 2021). While social media has provided new avenues for engagement, the extent to which it influences fan loyalty, participation, and satisfaction in Kwara State remains unclear.

Many sports clubs in Nigeria, particularly in Kwara State, struggle to leverage social media effectively due to limited digital literacy, inadequate infrastructure, and the prevalence of fake news (Odeyemi & Olagunju, 2018). Additionally, the overreliance on social media engagement raises concerns about the diminishing value of physical attendance at sporting events. Given these gaps, there is a need to investigate how social media impacts sports fans’ engagement in Kwara State and identify strategies for optimizing its use.
