IMPACT OF COMMUNICABLE DISEASES ON THE PHYSICAL AND COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT OF CHILDREN. A CASE STUDY ONSOME SELECTED PRIMARY SCHOOLS IN NASARAWA EGGON LGA NASARAWA STATE
Abstract
Communicable diseases significantly affect the physical and cognitive development of children, particularly in regions with limited healthcare resources. This study investigates the impact of communicable diseases on primary school children in Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Area, Nasarawa State. By focusing on selected primary schools, the research evaluates the prevalence of diseases such as malaria, typhoid, respiratory infections, and diarrheal diseases, and their effects on children’s growth, school attendance, academic performance, and cognitive abilities. Data were collected through surveys, interviews with teachers and parents, and health records from local clinics. The findings reveal a strong correlation between the frequency of communicable diseases and delays in physical growth, reduced concentration levels, and diminished academic achievements. The study highlights the urgent need for improved hygiene practices, health education, and accessible medical care in schools to mitigate these effects.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Communicable diseases remain a major public health challenge worldwide, particularly in developing countries. These diseases, which are caused by infectious agents such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites, are transmitted from one person to another through direct contact, airborne droplets, or contaminated surfaces (World Health Organization [WHO], 2020). In children, communicable diseases are of particular concern as they can significantly affect physical and cognitive development, often leading to long-term consequences.
Children in primary schools are particularly vulnerable to communicable diseases due to their developing immune systems and frequent interactions in shared environments. Diseases such as malaria, diarrhea, respiratory infections, and measles are prevalent in many parts of Nigeria and contribute significantly to morbidity and mortality rates (National Population Commission [NPC], 2018). These conditions can impede growth, weaken immune responses, and interfere with children’s ability to concentrate and learn effectively in school.
In Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Area (LGA) of Nasarawa State, the situation is compounded by socioeconomic factors such as poverty, inadequate healthcare facilities, poor hygiene practices, and limited access to clean water. These factors create an environment conducive to the spread of communicable diseases, particularly among school-aged children. Studies have shown that frequent illness during childhood is associated with delayed physical growth and impaired cognitive development, potentially affecting a child’s academic performance and future productivity (Adebayo & Akinlolu, 2019).
Given the critical role of education in personal and national development, it is essential to understand the impact of communicable diseases on children’s physical and cognitive development. This study aims to explore this impact by focusing on selected primary schools in Nasarawa Eggon LGA, identifying the most prevalent diseases, their effects on children, and potential strategies for mitigating these effects.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The burden of communicable diseases among children in primary schools has become a significant public health concern in Nigeria. Despite various interventions aimed at reducing childhood morbidity and mortality, diseases such as malaria, typhoid fever, and respiratory infections remain rampant, especially in rural and semi-urban areas like Nasarawa Eggon. These illnesses frequently result in absenteeism, reduced classroom participation, and poor academic outcomes.
Research indicates that physical ailments caused by communicable diseases can stunt growth, reduce physical activity, and delay developmental milestones in children (Eze & Chukwu, 2021). Similarly, the cognitive effects of these diseases, such as reduced attention span and memory loss, are often overlooked but have profound implications for educational attainment and long-term mental health (WHO, 2019). Despite these challenges, there is limited data on the specific impact of communicable diseases on the physical and cognitive development of children in Nasarawa Eggon LGA.
Without adequate intervention, the continued prevalence of communicable diseases may exacerbate educational inequities and hinder the overall development of children in the region. This study seeks to address this gap by examining the relationship between communicable diseases and child development in selected primary schools, with the aim of informing effective health and educational policies.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The primary objective of this study is to assess the impact of communicable diseases on the physical and cognitive development of children in selected primary schools in Nasarawa Eggon LGA. The specific objectives are as follows:
To identify the most common communicable diseases affecting primary school children in Nasarawa Eggon LGA.
To assess the physical effects of these diseases on the growth and development of affected children.
To examine the cognitive effects of these diseases on learning and academic performance.
To explore the role of socioeconomic and environmental factors in the prevalence of communicable diseases among children.
To recommend strategies for mitigating the impact of communicable diseases on child development in the study area.
1.4 Research Questions
The study seeks to answer the following questions:
What are the most common communicable diseases affecting primary school children in Nasarawa Eggon LGA?
How do these diseases affect the physical growth and development of children?
What are the cognitive implications of communicable diseases on children’s learning and academic performance?
What socioeconomic and environmental factors contribute to the prevalence of these diseases among children?
What strategies can be implemented to reduce the impact of communicable diseases on child development?
1.5 Significance of the Study
This study is significant for several reasons. First, it provides empirical evidence on the impact of communicable diseases on child development, highlighting the need for targeted health interventions in primary schools. Second, the findings can inform policymakers, educators, and healthcare providers in designing comprehensive programs to improve child health and education outcomes in Nasarawa Eggon LGA and similar contexts.
Third, the study contributes to the existing body of knowledge on child health and education in Nigeria, filling a critical gap in understanding the interplay between health and academic performance. Finally, the recommendations derived from this study can serve as a blueprint for implementing sustainable strategies to reduce the burden of communicable diseases among school-aged children.
1.6 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on the impact of communicable diseases on the physical and cognitive development of children in selected primary schools within Nasarawa Eggon LGA, Nasarawa State. It examines the prevalence of diseases such as malaria, diarrhea, and respiratory infections, their effects on children’s growth and academic performance, and the contributing socioeconomic and environmental factors. The study is limited to children aged 6-12 years enrolled in public and private primary schools in the study area.
1.7 Definition of Key Terms
Communicable Diseases: Illnesses caused by infectious agents that can be transmitted from one person to another through various means.
Physical Development: The growth and physical changes in a child’s body, including height, weight, and motor skills.
