DETERMINATION OF EYE CARE SERVICE UTILIZATION AMONG ADULTS IN URBAN SLUM IN KOGI STATE NIGERIA
Abstract
This study examines the determinants of eye care service utilization among adults residing in urban slums in Kogi State, Nigeria. Given the increasing burden of visual impairment and eye-related diseases, understanding the factors influencing access to and use of eye care services is critical for developing effective public health interventions. Utilizing a cross-sectional survey design, data were collected from 400 adults using structured questionnaires that assessed knowledge, attitudes, accessibility, affordability, and the availability of eye care services. The findings reveal that awareness of eye health and the presence of eye care facilities significantly correlate with increased utilization of these services. Socio-economic factors, such as income level and education, also emerged as crucial determinants, with higher levels of education and income associated with greater likelihoods of seeking eye care. Additionally, barriers such as transportation difficulties and financial constraints were identified as significant impediments to service utilization. The study highlights the need for targeted educational programs to raise awareness about eye health and to improve the accessibility and affordability of eye care services in urban slum areas. By addressing these determinants, health policy makers can enhance eye care service utilization, ultimately contributing to better eye health outcomes among adults in these underserved communities.
