THE IMPACT OF INADEQUATE SEX EDUCATION ON STUDENTS EXPOSURE TO RISK OF STDS IN TERTIARY INSTITUTION IN ANAMBRA STATE

Abstract

This study examines the impact of inadequate sex education on students’ exposure to the risk of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in tertiary institutions in Anambra State, Nigeria. Sex education plays a crucial role in equipping students with knowledge and skills to make informed decisions about sexual health, including preventing STDs. However, the adequacy and effectiveness of sex education programs vary widely, and gaps in knowledge can increase vulnerability to health risks among students.

Using a qualitative approach, the study investigates the current status of sex education in tertiary institutions within Anambra State, focusing on the content, delivery methods, and perceived effectiveness from the perspectives of students and educators. Data collection involves interviews and focus group discussions with students, teachers, and health professionals involved in sexual health education.

The findings highlight the challenges and gaps in existing sex education programs, including misconceptions, cultural barriers, and inadequate coverage of key topics related to STD prevention. The study also explores students’ knowledge levels about STDs, their attitudes towards safe sexual practices, and the influence of peer interactions and social norms on their behavior.

Implications of the study underscore the urgent need for comprehensive and culturally sensitive sex education programs in tertiary institutions to mitigate the risk of STDs among students in Anambra State. Recommendations include enhancing curriculum content, training educators, promoting open dialogue about sexual health, and integrating peer education initiatives to create supportive environments for informed decision-making.
