THE STUDY OF GRAMMATICAL COHESIVE DEVICES USED IN GOVERNOR BABAGANA UMARU ZULUM INAUGURAL SPEECH

Abstract:

This study investigates the grammatical cohesive devices employed in the inaugural speech of Governor Babagana Umaru Zulum, focusing on their role in enhancing textual coherence and communicative effectiveness. The speech, delivered upon assuming office, serves as a crucial discourse that outlines the governor’s vision, policies, and plans for governance in Borno State, Nigeria. Through a comprehensive analysis of cohesive devices such as conjunctions, pronouns, lexical cohesion, and grammatical parallelism, the study aims to uncover patterns of linguistic cohesion and their rhetorical functions within the speech.

By adopting Halliday and Hasan’s framework of cohesion, the research delves into the linguistic mechanisms used by Governor Zulum to establish logical connections, maintain thematic coherence, and guide the audience through the discourse structure. Through qualitative analysis, the study identifies and categorizes cohesive devices, examining their frequency, distribution, and semantic roles in shaping the discourse’s coherence and cohesion.

Furthermore, the study explores the pragmatic implications of cohesive devices within the context of political discourse, considering their role in audience engagement, persuasion, and the construction of political identity. By analyzing Governor Zulum’s linguistic choices and rhetorical strategies, the research sheds light on the linguistic resources employed by political leaders to convey their messages effectively and mobilize public support.

The findings of this study contribute to the fields of discourse analysis, political communication, and sociolinguistics by providing insights into the linguistic strategies used in political speeches, particularly in the context of Nigerian governance. Additionally, the study offers practical implications for speechwriters, political analysts, and language educators, highlighting the importance of cohesive devices in crafting coherent and persuasive discourse in public communication settings.
