SUSCEPTIBILITY OF STAPHYLOCOCCUS AUREUS AND BACILLUS SPP TO ANTIBIOTICS ON HOT ACQUEOUS EXTRACT OF HIBISCUS FLOWERS
Abstract:
In recent years, there has been growing interest in exploring natural compounds with potential antimicrobial properties as alternatives or adjuncts to conventional antibiotics. Hibiscus flowers, known for their rich phytochemical composition, have been traditionally used for various medicinal purposes. This study aimed to investigate the susceptibility of Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus spp to antibiotics when exposed to hot aqueous extract of hibiscus flowers.
Hot aqueous extract of hibiscus flowers was prepared using standard methods, and its antimicrobial activity was evaluated against Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus spp strains using the disk diffusion method. Additionally, the susceptibility of these bacterial strains to common antibiotics was determined using standard antibiotic susceptibility testing procedures.
The results revealed that the hot aqueous extract of hibiscus flowers exhibited significant antimicrobial activity against both Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus spp strains. Furthermore, when the bacterial strains were exposed to the combination of hibiscus flower extract and antibiotics, synergistic effects were observed, leading to enhanced antibacterial activity compared to the use of antibiotics alone.
These findings suggest that the hot aqueous extract of hibiscus flowers possesses potent antimicrobial properties that can augment the efficacy of antibiotics against Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus spp. Further research is warranted to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of action and to explore the potential clinical applications of hibiscus flower extract as a natural antimicrobial agent in combating bacterial infections.
