EFFECT OF SAW DUST ASH ON SOME PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF CONCRETE

Abstract:

This research investigates the effects of incorporating sawdust ash (SDA) into concrete on selected physical properties. Sawdust ash, a byproduct of biomass combustion, is considered as a supplementary cementitious material in this study. The experiment explores its impact on the physical characteristics of concrete, aiming to assess its potential as a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative in construction materials.

The study involves the production of concrete specimens with varying percentages of sawdust ash as partial replacement for Portland cement. Physical properties such as compressive strength, density, water absorption, and porosity are evaluated to discern the influence of sawdust ash on the performance of the concrete mixtures.

Through comprehensive testing and analysis, the research aims to provide insights into the feasibility of utilizing sawdust ash in concrete production. The findings may contribute to sustainable construction practices by offering an environmentally friendly alternative that incorporates a waste material into the production of concrete while addressing concerns related to resource conservation and waste management.

The research methodology encompasses the preparation of concrete mixtures with different proportions of sawdust ash, followed by casting specimens for testing. Compressive strength tests are conducted to assess the load-bearing capacity of the concrete, while density measurements provide information about the material’s mass per unit volume. Water absorption and porosity tests help evaluate the concrete’s resistance to moisture penetration.

The results obtained from this study have implications for the construction industry, as they contribute to the ongoing efforts to enhance the sustainability of building materials. The use of sawdust ash in concrete may not only address environmental concerns associated with waste disposal but also offer a viable solution for reducing the environmental footprint of construction activities.

Chapter One:

Introduction

1.1 Background

Concrete, as a widely utilized construction material, plays a pivotal role in the infrastructure development of nations. The demand for sustainable and environmentally friendly construction practices has led to an increasing interest in alternative materials and additives that can enhance the properties of concrete. One such material is sawdust ash, a byproduct of the wood processing industry. Sawdust ash, obtained from the combustion of sawdust, has shown potential as a supplementary cementitious material in concrete.

1.2 Rationale

The production of traditional Portland cement, a primary component of concrete, is associated with significant environmental impacts, including high energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Incorporating industrial byproducts like sawdust ash into concrete not only addresses the challenges of waste disposal but also contributes to the sustainable development goals of reducing environmental impact. Understanding the effect of sawdust ash on the physical properties of concrete is crucial for its practical implementation in construction.

1.3 Research Aim and Objectives

The primary aim of this research is to investigate the effect of sawdust ash on selected physical properties of concrete. The specific objectives are:

To assess the influence of varying proportions of sawdust ash on the compressive strength of concrete.

To examine the impact of sawdust ash on the workability and setting time of concrete.

To analyze the effect of sawdust ash on the density and porosity characteristics of concrete.

1.4 Significance of the Study

This study holds significance in several dimensions:

Environmental Sustainability: Investigating the use of sawdust ash contributes to the exploration of eco-friendly alternatives for concrete production, aligning with global sustainability efforts.

Waste Utilization: The research examines the potential utilization of a byproduct—sawdust ash—reducing the environmental burden associated with its disposal.

Construction Industry Enhancement: Understanding the impact of sawdust ash on concrete properties provides valuable insights for the construction industry, guiding the development of more sustainable building materials.

1.5 Scope of the Study

The research focuses on the influence of sawdust ash on specific physical properties of concrete, with a concentration on compressive strength, workability, setting time, density, and porosity. The study considers different proportions of sawdust ash as a partial replacement for cement to assess its varying effects on these properties.

1.6 Research Methodology

The investigation employs a systematic experimental approach, involving the preparation of concrete specimens with different percentages of sawdust ash. Compressive strength tests, workability assessments, and evaluations of setting time, density, and porosity will be conducted to quantify the impact of sawdust ash on the physical properties of concrete.

1.7 Organization of the Thesis

The thesis is structured into several chapters, each addressing specific aspects of the research. Chapter Two reviews relevant literature on alternative materials in concrete and the impact of sawdust ash on various properties. Chapter Three details the research methodology, highlighting the experimental design and procedures. Subsequent chapters present and analyze the findings, discuss their implications, and conclude with recommendations for further research and practical applications.

In conclusion, this introductory chapter lays the foundation for the investigation into the effect of sawdust ash on the physical properties of concrete, emphasizing the environmental and practical significance of the study in the context of sustainable construction practices.
