ABSTRACT
The Niger Delta region of Nigeria has been a focal point for oil exploration and production since the discovery of crude oil in 1956. Over the decades, the activities of multinational oil companies in this region have generated substantial economic benefits for the nation, but they have also been accompanied by severe environmental degradation and human rights challenges. This study provides a comprehensive appraisal of the multifaceted impact of oil exploration and production on the Niger Delta region from 1959 to the present.
The research employs a historical analysis to trace the evolution of oil-related activities, examining the economic, social, and environmental consequences. It delves into the complex interplay between multinational oil companies, the Nigerian government, and local communities, investigating the mechanisms through which oil extraction has led to environmental degradation, loss of livelihoods, and human rights abuses.
Key environmental issues, including oil spills, gas flaring, and deforestation, are scrutinized to unveil the extent of ecological damage.
