NUTRITIONAL ASSESSMENT OF BITTER LEAF AND TELEFARIA OCCIDENTALIS

ABSTRACT

The study examined the nutritional qualities of bitter leaf (Vernonia amygdalina). 400g of the samples was obtained from a back yard farm at New-Bussa in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State. The samples were divided into 100g each: as unwashed, washed, washed / sun dried and washed / frozen samples. Laboratory analysis was carried out to determine the proximate composition; vitamins (A, C and K) and minerals (Fe, Ca, P and I) using approved method of AOAC (Association of Official Analytical Chemists) of 1994, 1998 and 1990. The results of proximate analysis revealed that the crude protein (26.90%) and Ash (13.20%) contents of unprocessed bitter leaf were higher than the processed bitter leaf; also, the results from vitamin A (240.60µg /100g), C (38.70%µg /100g), and K (11.20µg /100g); minerals Fe (1.50µg /100g), Ca (124.60µg /100g), P (77.60µg /100g) and I (0.124µg /100g) contents were observed to be higher in un processed bitter leaf than the processed. This indicate that unprocessed bitter leaf contains adequate Vitamin A, C and K; minerals Fe, Ca, P and I than processed. The study recommends that for daily requirement to enrich human diet unprocessed bitter leaf should be preferred provided the bitter taste is not a barrier.
