AN ASSESSMENT OF CORPORATE GOVERNMENT IN NIGERIA BANKING INDUSTRY (A CASE STUDY OF KEYSTONE BANK PLC, 2003 – 2004)
ABSTRACT
This project on An Assessment of Corporate Government in Nigeria Banking Industry in Keystone Bank Plc (2011 – 2013) was undertaken to assess the possible relationship between corporate governance and the Nigeria Banking Industry using profitability and earning per share as variables in the period 2011 to 2013. The null hypothesis in this study state that corporate governance does not have any significant impacts in Nigeria Banking Industry in terms of profitability and earning per share in Keystone Bank. The ex-post fact design was used for the study and the statistical tool used in testing the hypothesis is pearson product moment correlation coefficient. Quota control sampling technique was adapted in this work to select profitability and earning per share product as samples representing corporate governance and the Nigeria Banking Industry. The relevant data used in this work were collected mainly from the secondary sources through the use of research questions as the major instrument. The critical value of “t” was based on 5% significance level and 1 degree of freedom. The findings showed that corporate governance does not have any significant impacts in Nigeria Banking Industry in terms of profitability and earning per share in the period 2011 to 2013. Also that the impact of corporate governance on bank profitability in Nigeria is to incorporates transparency and accountability of banks. Part of the recommendation were that one of the factors affecting bank’s profitability is excess spending. Therefore banks should reduce the rate of their spending which will lead to high profitability maximization of banks.
