AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE CONDUCT OF SSCE EXAMINATION IN SPECIAL CENTRES IN NIGERIA AND ITS IMPLICATION ON THE EDUCATION SYSTEM

ABSTRACT

This study evaluates the conduct of Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) by WAEC and NECO in Rivers State, Nigeria. The study was carried out to ascertain the necessary conditions needed for the conduct of examinations by both bodies in the state. The design adopted was the descriptive survey method. The target population consists of all the male and female educationists in the 23 local government areas of Rivers State. The stratified random sampling technique was adopted to select 600 respondents from zonal education boards and the main ministry in the state capital including some church leaders. The instrument for data collection was a Public Examination Evaluation Conduct Scale (PEECS) was constructed and validated by the researcher with the assessment of some psychometricians. One research question and two hypotheses were used and tested statistically with mean and standard deviation with reference mean of 2.50 and t-test analysis at 0.05 level of significance respectively. The result shows that the mean scores of six of the ten variables of the conduct of SSCE were not significant as they were below the reference mean of 2.50 while four were significant. The result of the two hypotheses shows that there is significant difference between the conduct of SSCE by WAEC and NECO examinations in the urban and rural areas. Based on the findings, it was concluded that the two examination bodies need to improve their facilities for smooth conduct of the respective examinations.
