THE NIGERIA POLICE FORCE AND ITS CONSTITUTIONAL RESPONSIBILITY IN THE PRESENT DEMOCRATIC DISPENSATION
This investigation is an interrogation of the Nigeria Police Force and its constitutional responsibilities in the present democratic dispensation in Nigeria. The paper, which is a library research that used documentary evidence, was agitated that the police in Nigeria have been enmeshed in a lot of unprofessional conduct in defiance to the constitutional roles. Despite the challenging oppositions created by poor governance, poor funding, inadequate operational equipment, none collaborative synergy between security agencies among others, the paper observed that the police in Nigeria and, indeed, all the agencies entrusted with security have, against the constitutional provisions in a democracy, failed to realize the grave enormity of their failure to secure live and property to the extent that insurgents are fast gaining grounds and that international terrorist groups might be using the security inadequacies to recruit unemployed youths and others into terrorist networks. Recommendations on how to build an efficient and effective police force in Nigeria were proffered to include among others good governance, adoption of new strategic ways of policing and security, and creating police reforms. These strategies are assumed, can compare with highly rated intelligent-crime-prevention and security-watchdog agencies anywhere in the world.
